academic advisor for the university's MBS externship program
As an academic advisor for the MBS externship program at Rutgers, I guide 2-3 teams of graduate and undergraduate students as they partner with private companies and government agencies to complete design-related innovative real-world projects. I manage the entire process from setting the strategy to usability testing and further optimization. In addition, I deliver a lecture to all of the 150+ MBS externship students on Design Thinking and visual design principles.
The teams and the stakeholders learn about the how and why of the Design Thinking process. Together we devise a customized UX Strategy that results in a successful launches of apps and websites.
Educate both the MBS students and the company's stakeholders about the UX design process and principles.
I guide the students through the stages of the Design Thinking process. Since the student teams are cross-functional, I take the time to explain what each stage entails and provide them with resources. When I talk to the business stakeholders, I emphasize the ROI that taking the time to research your target users brings, the importance of generating a lot of ideas, even wild ones, and the necessity of going through several iterations of prototyping, then performing usability testing and further optimizing.
I also advise on accessibility - what the ADA requirements entail and how to meet them. Some projects focus on data visualization when I educate the team on how to pick the relevant visualization that would communicate the story the data needs to tell, and how to style them for maximum impact.
The students use Miro and/or Figma to do the work and collaborate. I also advise them on how to articulate their design decisions and how to present their projects.
Since I used to work for design agencies, I appreciate the variety that the MBS externship projects span, the energy the students bring, and the business acumen the stakeholders and my fellow advisors provide. I had worked on challenging and innovative projects such as:
